![]() The boss battles are great and keeps you on your toes. What can be annoying is that once you take damage you bounce back and lose all your rings, and are unable to reclaim them. You run through the level and collect rings while bashing the badniks. The game plays as well as any of the classic Sonic games do. There are other conditions for other bonuses as well, such as ones that gives you an extra life or continue. Along the way you collect rings and can find a box with a continue on it.Īlso depending on how many rings you finish the stage with you might get an extra 10 rings (this involves finishing the stage with a ring count that's divisible by 10). In the bonus stage you must reach the sign at the end of the stage before time runs out. When you finish the level with 50 rings or more you enter a bonus stage. You still get the extra life you just are left with 00 rings. In this game once you reach 100 the ring count at the top left is set back to 00. The last difference I'll talk about is the usage of rings. Then there's the hangliders from the fourth and fifth stages (these need a little getting used to to operate). If you're not careful you'll fall out and land in hot lava on impact. In the first and second stage you get to ride mine carts along tracks that lead to a wall. Though, after you locate all the chaos emeralds, you just unlock a different ending (as well as an extra level), not the ability to turn into Super Sonic.Īnother difference is interactive objects. Also, unlike the Genesis' Sonic games which had you enter bouns rounds to gather power rings in order to gain the 7 chaos emeralds, the SMS version places the emeralds in the levels for you to find. The main gameplay itself is a little harder than the Genesis version. Sonic 2 for the Sega Master System is completely different from it's Genesis counterpart. On the top of my list were Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I knew right away what first few games I wanted to get for the system. But, no doubt through dedication and a desire for increased quality, both were back in time for this game's release in 1992.Recently I purchased a Sega Powerbase converter for my Sega CD/Genesis Model 1. Both of those are elements that had to be taken out for the Master System in 1991. And, to drive home the point, SEGA's developers of the day clearly took the time to invest effort in overcoming some of the technical problems that the first Master System Sonic had as well - because this time around Sonic can once again collect a cascade of scattered rings after he's been damaged by an enemy or environmental hazard, and he can once again curl up into a ball to blast through certain walls and barriers. It is its own game, a full-on standalone sequel to the 8-bit Sonic that came before it. By now, you should begin to be getting the hint that the Master System version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 isn't any kind of downgraded port to be insulted because it's not as technically impressive or graphically capable as its same-name Genesis counterpart. And the underwater sections of Aqua Lake Zone feature bubbles that Sonic will get trapped inside, altering the gameplay of those portions of those stages when compared to other submerged stages you might have seen Sonic explore in the past. Later, while dashing through the cloudscape of the Sky High Zone, you'll find hang gliders for our hero to hold on to. ![]() Right off the bat, in the game's introductory Under Ground Zone, you'll run across a series of mine carts that Sonic can ride in. Right? This sequel also includes a few unique in-stage transportation elements. At least he's not going to drown in there. Its zones include the Scrambled Egg, Crystal Egg and Gimmick Mountain Zones, among others not seen in any of the series' 16-bit installments. And also different is this game's set of level themes and designs - whereas the Master System version of the first Sonic closely held to the stages established in the Genesis original, Sonic 2 on the Master System completely blazes its own trail. Robotnik has kidnapped him, and it's up to Sonic to save his friend. But that's where the similarities begin to end, because instead of having Tails follow you around in this edition, he's the focus of the plot - Dr. His co-star is here as well - because like its Genesis alter-ego, this Sonic 2 also introduces the Blue Blur's two-tailed sidekick, Miles "Tails" Prower. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Master System version, is once again a side-scrolling platformer starring SEGA's recklessly fast hedgehog hero.
